IJJ Fellowship, 2010

‘Immigration in the Heartland’:
15 Fellows Take Part in Program

Fifteen U.S. journalists participated in an IJJ fellowship program focusing on “Immigration in the Heartland.” It was conducted in partnership with the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Funding was provided by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.

These stories were supported by IJJ’s Justice and Journalism Fund from a grant from the Ford Foundation.

PBS Airs Film on Lasting Effects
of ICE Raid on Guatemala, Iowa

PBS' Frontline World aired a documentary on the human effects -- in both the U.S. and Guatemala -- of the 2008 ICE raid in Postville, Iowa. The 16-minute film, “Guatemala: In the Shadow of the Raid,” aired May 11, 2010.

at ‘Flip Side of Immigration’

A multimedia production by IJJ Fellow Jon Lowenstein, posted on MSNBC.com, illustrates the deportation process and offers migrants’ descriptions of why they risk returning to the U.S.

A Range of Stories Focus on Student,
Mexicans, Brazilians, Jamaicans, Haitian

Other IJJ-supported stories on immigration were published in the Washington Post Magazine, the Financial Times, La Opinion, Colorlines and the Houston Chronicle. The subjects range from a college student at Georgetown to migrants from Mexico, Brazil, Jamaica, Haiti and Central America.
